Chapter Thirty
Gabriel
Kneeling in my office, the walls feel like they're closing in around me. It feels like someone is squeezing my heart until there’s nothing left. It’s beating rapidly in my chest as I attempt to concentrate on breathing, willing myself not to succumb to the grief savagely taking over my body. Maverick’s on the other side of the door trying to make me understand about the tuxedo fitting, but no longer able to hear his words, I’ve blocked him out.
“I’m such an idiot!” I scream out with as much pain as I can muster, beating my clenched fist against the floor and aching to feel something else besides this.
No person should ever have to go through this—to be left in the dark like they don’t matter. That’s what Maverick is doing. He’s making me feel like I’m second best, when in private, he utters intimate words of how I’m the most important person to him. To know he’s been telling me those things and not meaning them crushes me.
After everything we’ve been through, all the things we’ve shared together, he’s still marrying that bitch. Still throwing his life away, when I’m right here ready to hand him mine. When I’m ready to hand him everything. He’s told me countless times how much he despises her, and how much he doesn’t want to marry her, yet, he still is. For reasons, I still don’t quite understand, he’s still going to go through with it. I feel like my world is imploding. I’ve given myself to him an innumerable amount of times, thinking by some chance that I’m enough to put all this behind him. But, no. He’s going to do it anyway.
Standing to my feet, I sway as the grief somersaults through me. I don’t know how anyone can deal with this amount of pain going through them. I’ve barely tipped the edges of it, and it’s almost crushing me. The longer I stand here, staring at all the pictures lining the wall, my gaze falls on the picture of us sitting on my desk—a bright smile on both of our faces as we press ourselves together. It’s like it’s taunting me with something I can never have.
I hear him step away from the door, making his way down the hall. Glancing over my shoulder at the door, I turn my gaze back onto the picture letting the tears begin to stream down my face. I’m not strong enough to keep them at bay anymore. No one should have to be strong enough when they realize their entire world is crumbling all around them.
Knowing this is the only opportunity to get out of here, I turn for the door with only one thought echoing through my mind. I have to get out of here. Peeking out of the blind before I unlock the door, I see Maverick talking to Sabrina next to the front office door. Slowly, I disengage the lock and turn the doorknob, opening the door. I watch to see if the sound has alerted them I’m coming out.
